4 Myths About Refinishing Your Basement

An unfinished basement is actually a world of possibilities! Oftentimes homeowners will shy away from taking on the job of having their basement finished because they feel the job is too big, too costly, or too overwhelming. We’re here to tell you that while, yes, finishing a basement costs money, and yes, it is a big job, it’s completely worth it! Here are some common myths that homeowners think about finishing a basement - and why they’re just not true.

Myth 1:

It’s not worth remodeling a basement because of the flood risk

You hear about basement flooding often. It’s even included as jokes or occurrences on TV shows. It’s not uncommon for basements to flood during big rains or rapid snowmelt. However, basement flooding and leaks - even during these high moisture events - are completely avoidable with proper waterproofing. By installing a waterproofing system for your entire basement BEFORE you remodel or finish the basement, you won’t have to worry about flood risk.

Myth 2:

Finished basements are too dark to be enjoyed

You may not have the biggest windows in your basement compared to the rest of your house, but that doesn’t mean that your finished basement will be dark or a place you don’t want to hang out! You have control over lighting, wall color, floor color and more - all of which play a big role in how bright and cheery a space is. Some people even like to add fireplaces in their finished basement, which can be a nice, cozy option to cuddle up to. And tying in the basement finishes - such as flooring and decor - to the rest of the house will make the basement feel more like an extension of the house or a downstairs rather than a basement.

Myth 3:

There isn’t enough value in finishing a basement

This one couldn’t be further from the truth. Completely finishing a basement and creating a new living area can add a resale value of up to 77.6%. You’re essentially adding usable square footage to your house, and it can be used for a wide array of things, including an entertainment space, family room, music or hobby room, game room, and even a rental! The options are endless, and so as well as being able to enjoy the space yourself, if you ever do decide to sell, you’ll see a lot of money back on the investment. People love more square footage!

Myth 4:

Cost for a standard basement suggested by a company is always right

This one is a bit tricky. A lot of times, when homeowners get quotes from companies, their instinct is to go with the cheapest option. That isn’t necessarily best. A lot of times, that can mean that companies are cutting corners, using less-than-ideal quality of items, or aren’t licensed and insured. That last one means that if something goes wrong during your remodel, the company isn’t insured to fix it. So if a company tells you that they can develop a basement including a basement for less than $20,000 - you need to research this company. While you want to make sure you aren’t paying too much (some companies will do that, too), paying too little is almost worst in the long run. We suggest getting multiple quotes and meeting with the company who will be running the remodel. And we’re here to help with any questions!
