Questions to Ask Your Homebuilder

custom 1.jpeg

Here at AJ, we’re obviously pretty partial to our awesome team. We love what we do and we have many years of experience of doing it well! However, if you’re looking for a custom home builder or if you’re interviewing several, we’ve compiled a list of some questions you can ask. We love when clients ask these questions - it shows you know your stuff!

BEFORE you contact builders, though, we suggest one important thing: Determine your needs. Decide what your price range is and what size and style of home you’d like. Check out portfolios and online photos of companies and read testimonials.

Once you’ve figured those important details out, you’re ready to make some calls to potential home builders.

Questions to Ask Your New Home Builder

  1. How many years have you been in business, and how many homes have you built? Are you licensed and insured? (This is important!)

  2. Do you only build from existing floor plans, or can I provide my own set of plans?

  3. What features are standard in the homes you build? What are the upgrade options?

  4. When and how can I make changes or upgrades throughout the building process? Do all decisions need to be finalized before construction begins?

  5. Who will be overseeing the construction of my home? Who can I reach out to with questions as they arise, and how can I contact them?

  6. Do you utilize online programs to connect with you throughout the process to make changes and sign contracts?

  7. What is your process for inspections throughout construction and final walk-through?

  8. How long will it take to build my home?

  9. How and when will the final cost of my home be determined?

  10. Can you provide me with references or testimonials from previous home buyers?

Trust Your Gut

When it comes down to it, trusting your gut is arguably the most important thing. How did you feel when interacting with the builder? Are they open to questions? Are they asking you questions? You’ll be working closely with your builder for at least six months, so make sure you get a good gut feeling about who you’re going with. As always, if you want to know more, or if you have any questions about the process or what to know about what you need to get started building a custom home, feel free to give us a call! We’d be happy to chat on the phone or schedule a meeting to walk you through it.
