Awesome Options for Built-in Storage

Awesome Options for Built-in Storage

One of the most common complaints people have about their homes is the lack of storage houses - especially older houses - have. Finding solutions so you can organize your family’s life isn’t always easy. You can add more furniture, organize and reorganize that same old hallway closet, try bins, buckets, baskets, downsize and donate half your stuff - or you can try some simple and genius built-in storage options.

We like built-in storage for a handful of reasons. It’s easy to do (whether you’re adding it onto a remodel or just looking for some fast solutions), it looks high-end (everyone loves custom built-ins!), and you can customize it to your needs. You can add the right amount of tucked-away storage that fits you or your family’s lifestyle.

There are hundreds of options for built-in ideas. You can find them online, or if you have it in your head, we can put it on paper and then into your home for you. This article will touch on a few of our favorites for a variety of reasons. Grab an idea you like from our list or come up with your own!

Mudroom Built-Ins

Mudroom built-ins look custom and desirable, and they serve an amazing purpose. Every one has coats, scarves, bags, purses, backpacks, leashes, and more that need a place to go when you first walk in the door. This is a stylish and easy solution to that problem. You can stop draping your coats over chairs and have an actual place for them to be tucked neatly away. Mudrooms are versatile, too: you can make your house work for you. You can have a designated room for your mudroom, or you can build it around your hallway or unused corner of your house.

Pull-Out Drawers

Besides offering up a place to put things, we like pull-out drawers because they can utilize otherwise wasted space in your home. You can put them anywhere: under beds, tucked into kitchens, bathrooms, etc, but our favorite option is this one.

This homeowner used empty space behind the walls and under her window to have pull-out drawers installed. When closed, they sit flush with the wall. It offers up a storage solution (she uses her for her kids toys) in a way that is genius and taps into otherwise unusable space! If you have a place in your home like this, consider having some pull-out drawers installed. It’s a pretty smart solution!

 Built-in Cleaning Closet

This is one of our favorites for two reasons: first, because it’s a simple solution to have installed that most people don't think about, and second because a lot of people don’t know what to do with those oddly shaped brooms and mops!

These cupboards are installed on the side of your fridge, adding character to your kitchen and a simple solution for your cleaning items. Bonus: you can stick all those deadly cleaners up high, out of reach of kids and pets.

Doorway Wrap-Around

This is a really cool way to not only dress up your home and make it look and feel more custom, but to really get a ton of storage out of wasted space! Check out the before and after of these cool built-in shelve around these french doors. It adds so much character and charm, and creates a ton of shelving for books, decor, and to tuck odds and ends away! You can do this with almost any door in your house, too, as long as there is enough room around it. It’s so cool looking that we might put one around every door in our houses!

This is another awesome example of using otherwise wasted space! Have recessed drawers installed in-between studs in your walls. It’s a great solution for rooms like the one pictured, a bathroom with not as much  room for storage. These can also be built under stairs (using up that weirdly shaped, awkward space), and in pretty much any room you can think of that you might want or need it!
